The Crownholds

Project Brief

The brief was self-assigned, to design the Royal Family of Ferezovia, a Kingdom for my fantasy world. The aim was to design the King, Consort, and Prince/Knight, each with different roles to fulfil.

It was apart of a Cultural Studies Module, where we were looking into real cultures and using them as inspiration in our work. I looked into Medieval Spain and Traditional Pakistan.

Minotaurs

I had a look into minotaurs and their anatomy for this project, as the King and Prince are going to be minotaurs. They are extremely muscular, with the head of a bull. There are a few different versions of minotaurs, however the ones I wish to depict have the head and legs of a bull, but the torso of a man.

In my references I also looked at heavy weight lifters who have a lot of practical muscle and fat, where there is a lot less definition, but a lot of mass.

The Kingdom's Crest

Each kingdom has its crest that is used on banners and armour, as an easy way to identify the kingdom.
I used the national flower, bougainvillea, as well as an archway to match the architecture. I included leaves for the flower but made them a darker pink to create a simpler color scheme for the symbol.

I also tested what it would look like embroidered on banners, embossed in metal, and printed on paper.

Iterations For The King

Using my initial sketches, I combined the elements of each I liked best to make the final design.

I took elements from both Royal Spanish and Pakistani clothing when deciding what he would wear.

I liked the large silhouette the middle one had, it felt the most Kingly, however I also liked the crown of the third one being built around the nose.

Process For The King

I went with a pink, purple and red color scheme, keeping within the warm tones of the symbol for the kingdom, using gold for the metal as it compliments the colours really nicely, as well as standing out, while still fitting within the warmer tones.

I added lots of details, such as the pupils being horizontal, the kingdom's crest as a pattern on the tunic, the braids in the beard and many more.

I wanted him to look strong and powerful, with a slightly menacing stare.

Iterations For The Consort

In all honesty, I really disliked how this design was turning out. I wanted the dress to look elegant and royal, as well as being fairly easy for her to put on and move around in due to her age and ability.

I ended up going with the long sleeves and waist band from Spanish dresses, and a similar cut and crown to Pakistani dresses. I think the silhouette could be fitting of either.

Process For The Consort

I wanted to show the vibrancy of her character, who she used to be, in her clothing, so I used very bright and saturated shades of pink, many gemstones, and used gold to match the other designs.

I wanted her crown to have a similar feel to the King's, with some coming down to toward the face, with a generally more organic design.

Her character struggles with severe dementia which made me give her a more simple design, however adding enough details to still keep it feeling royal.

Iterations For The Prince

I looked at the different kinds of armour worn in Spain and Pakistan, and ended up leaning a lot more toward the Spanish armour, with more Pakistani inspired clothing underneath.

I liked how the flow of the fabrics contrasted with the smoothness of the armour. It allows for a lot of movement, as well as showing that he's a very open and easy person.

Process For The Prince

I spent a lot of time working on the details of the armour, designing the different engravings and hammered elements.

I added the same crest pattern to his clothes, as I did the others. He has curly fur like his mother's hair, to contrast his father's furs. This allows moth minotaur to look more separate from each other.

It also shows he gets more of his traits from his mother, like hair, skin and eye colour, implying he also takes after her personality, not his father.
